How to Install Compacted Stone Tiles Outdoors

A practical sequence for installing compacted stone tiles outdoors, from preparing the screed and drainage to adhesive selection, grouting and final cleaning.

An outdoor tiled surface is only as reliable as the system beneath it. Colour and pattern may define the finished terrace, courtyard or hospitality space, but the long-term result depends on substrate preparation, drainage, movement accommodation, adhesive coverage, careful grouting and the correct final clean.

This guide summarises the installation sequence for outdoor compacted stone surfaces supplied by CLEM. It is intended as a practical overview for designers, builders and installers—not as a substitute for the current product technical guide, the adhesive and grout manufacturers' data sheets, or project-specific advice from the designer, engineer or site supervisor.

The exact product, thickness, finish and intended application should always be confirmed before installation begins.

Treat the installation as a complete system

Outdoor conditions expose a tiled surface to water, temperature change, direct sun and movement between construction layers. These forces do not act on the tile alone. The screed, waterproofing where required, adhesive, joints, grout, falls and perimeter details need to work together.

Before material arrives on site, confirm:

- the selected compacted stone surface is suitable for the intended outdoor application;
- the substrate build-up, waterproofing and drainage strategy are resolved;
- finished levels and falls coordinate with doors, drains and adjoining materials;
- movement and perimeter joints are shown on the set-out;
- the adhesive and grout have been selected for the exact substrate, tile format and exposure;
- enough tiles are available to mix pieces from different boxes or pallets and accommodate cutting and replacement stock.

This early coordination is particularly important in patterned installations. A geometric layout can appear simple on plan while creating difficult cuts, narrow edges or interrupted joints when it reaches a threshold, column or drain.

Start with a stable, dry and fully cured substrate

Compacted stone tile should be installed over a stable, dry and fully cured concrete screed, or a properly smoothed concrete substrate designed to receive an adhesive-fixed finish. The surface must be sound, clean and free from dust, laitance, oil, curing compounds, loose matter, discontinuities or other substances that could compromise adhesion.

Flatness should be checked against the needs of the selected tile format. Adhesive is not a substitute for correcting an unsuitable substrate. Any cracks, changes in substrate, waterproofing interfaces or areas of uncertainty should be assessed and resolved by the responsible project team before tiling begins.

The substrate and surrounding conditions must remain within the temperature range stated by the installation-product manufacturers. Do not install onto frozen, excessively hot or otherwise unsuitable surfaces.

Resolve falls, drainage and movement joints before setting out

Water must be directed away from the tiled field. The construction build-up and finished surface should provide continuous falls toward suitable drainage points, without low areas that allow water to pond.

The supplied installation guidance identifies movement joints at approximately every 3 to 4 linear metres. This is a planning reference, not a replacement for project design. Final spacing and locations should follow the designer or site supervisor and should coordinate with structural or substrate joints, changes in plane, perimeters and other movement-prone conditions.

For the outdoor installation described in the source guide, maintain joints of approximately 3 to 5 mm between tiles, depending on the module and laying pattern. Confirm the final joint width against the selected product, grout and project requirements before work starts.

Dry-lay a representative area where possible. Check the pattern, cuts and alignment, and mix pieces from different boxes or pallets so natural tonal variation is distributed across the installation instead of forming isolated patches.

Cut with a water-cooled diamond blade

Use a water-cooled tile cutter with a diamond blade when cutting compacted stone. Plan the cutting station so slurry does not contaminate finished areas or enter unprotected joints and drainage systems.

Check cut edges before installation, particularly where they will remain visible at thresholds, steps or exposed perimeters. Edge treatment and termination details should be agreed before large areas are laid.

Select the adhesive and trowel for the format

On a suitably prepared screed or compatible technical membrane, the supplied guidance recommends an adhesive from an established manufacturer classified as **C2 TE S1**, applied with a **10 mm notched trowel**.

Under the EN 12004 classification system, C2 TE S1 identifies an improved cementitious adhesive with reduced vertical slip, extended open time and S1 deformability. The classification helps define performance, but it does not by itself confirm compatibility with every substrate or exterior condition. Follow the chosen adhesive manufacturer's current technical data sheet.

For the identified large-format modules with sides of **67.2 cm and 50.5 cm**, the guidance recommends a rapid-setting **C2 FT S1** adhesive, applied with a **15 mm half-moon notched trowel** using double spreading. Double spreading applies adhesive to both the prepared substrate and the back of the tile to support the required contact and reduce voids.

Lift tiles periodically during installation to verify that the selected trowel, adhesive consistency and working method are producing appropriate coverage. Do not assume coverage from the appearance of the combed adhesive alone.

Keep the set-out and joints consistent

Place each tile into the fresh adhesive while maintaining the approved joint width and alignment. Work from fixed control lines rather than allowing small dimensional changes to accumulate across the surface.

The installer should protect movement joints and drainage details instead of filling them with rigid adhesive or grout. Clean adhesive from the joint depth as work progresses so there is sufficient space for the specified grout or sealant.

Allow the adhesive to dry completely before grouting. Required curing time depends on the adhesive, substrate, weather and tile format, so follow the manufacturer's stated conditions rather than relying on a fixed timetable.

Grout in small, controlled sections

Outdoor out_PIETRA guidance calls for a **coarse-grain, non-additivated cementitious grout**. Lightly dampen the surface before grouting to reduce rapid absorption, but do not leave water standing inside the joints.

Work on approximately **0.25 square metres at a time**. Spread grout over the entire small section with a rubber float, moving in four directions so the joints are filled consistently and the surface is covered evenly.

Immediately emulsify the grout with a traditional sponge and remove the excess. Change the cleaning water frequently. Do not cover a large area and wait for grout to dry across the face of the compacted stone; the small-area method is intended to prevent stubborn residue and unnecessary aggressive cleaning later.

Grout selection differs between treated indoor in_PIETRA and untreated outdoor out_PIETRA surfaces. Confirm the surface type before ordering or applying any grout.

Use the least aggressive cleaning method first

When grouting has been completed carefully and excess material has been removed immediately, extensive post-installation cleaning should not normally be required.

If residue or construction dirt remains, begin with the mildest suitable method:

1. **Light residue:** rub gently with a white cleaning pad and warm water.
2. **Stubborn marks or light grout residue:** use the manufacturer-recommended Pietrastain degreasing cleaner in accordance with its label and current product guidance.
3. **Deep or persistent contamination:** stop and confirm the method with CLEM or the surface manufacturer before escalating. Pietradisaster is a concentrated alkaline cleaner identified for deep cleaning, but it can remove surface treatments, which must then be reinstated where applicable.

Avoid acidic cleaners and aggressive degreasers. These can damage the material or remove its surface treatment. Current manufacturer guidance identifies neutral detergent for routine care of treated indoor surfaces and a pressure washer as an option for deeper cleaning of untreated outdoor surfaces. Always test the approved method in a discreet area first and protect adjacent materials.

Protect the surface through handover

Installation is not complete when the grout is finished. Protect the tiled area from other trades, impact, concentrated construction loads and unsuitable coverings while the adhesive and grout cure.

Before handover, verify:

- falls drain correctly and there is no visible ponding;
- movement, perimeter and sealant joints remain clear and correctly finished;
- grout is consistent and no residue remains on the tile face;
- damaged or unacceptable pieces have been replaced;
- the approved cleaning and maintenance instructions are documented;
- spare tiles are retained and identified for future repairs.

A successful compacted stone installation depends on disciplined sequencing. Prepare the substrate, resolve water and movement, choose installation products for the actual format and exposure, work in controlled areas and clean immediately. These steps allow the material's colour, mineral texture and modular pattern to remain the focus of the finished outdoor space.
